What is Short Sightedness?

Our last post looked at long sightedness (hyperopia), this time we will talk about what could be considered the opposite condition, short sightedness (myopia). It causes objects at a distance to appear blurry and out of focus. This is caused by the image focussing in front of the retina rather than directly on it as it should. The distance at which people have trouble focussing can vary depending on the severity of the condition.

Myopia is often a hereditary condition but can sometimes occur naturally by factors such as being involved in a job that requires a lot of close up work or by the eyes being damaged in another way. It is recommended that people who do close up work take some time out to focus on distant objects at regular intervals.

The treatment is the same as for long sightedness. Corrective eyewear or contact lenses are usually prescribed. The lenses for correcting myopia are concave in order to make up for the excessive positive diopters and focus the image correctly on the retina. Again, laser eye surgery is possible for this condition but can come with complications.

If you think that you may be suffering with myopia or any other eye condition, get down to the nearest opticians in Coventry or wherever you are and get your eyes tested. The longer you leave it the worse it could get.
