Long sightedness, also known as hyperopia is an eye defect that stops a person from clearly seeing objects at a short distance. In most cases it occurs when the eyeball is not long enough or the lens is not able to become round enough.
It is usually a genetic condition and means that images at close range tend to focus behind the retina. It can however be brought on by a number of things such as migraines, sinus infection, injury and the natural process of aging.
The most obvious manifestation of the condition is that objects that get closer become blurred. In hyperopia sufferers the power of the lens and cornea is not usually sufficient to adjust and remain focussed on an object at close range.
The most common treatment of the condition is with corrective eye wear or lenses. The lenses used to treat hyperopia are usually of the convex type. This type of lens make light focus closer than it does naturally due to a positive dioptric value. If the patient seeks a more permanent solution than laser eye surgery may also be an option. This of course comes at a cost but many prefer it to the discomfort of having to permanently wear glasses.
If you are concerned that you may be suffering with long sightedness or any other eye condition then you should go for a checkup at your local Coventry opticians. Depending on your circumstances you may be entitled to a free eye examination.
